My name is Yen, and I am in my 50’s and live just outside Kendal, the gateway to the Lake District in Cumbria.  I am yoga teacher and also run my own business Yoga Hikes with my partner Kevin, who is a UK and International Mountain Leader.

I started my yoga teacher training in 2007 and completed my 200 hours in 2011 and have been teaching full-time since 2014. Each year, I complete additional CPD hours for my own enjoyment, practice and for the love of yoga! I haven’t always been a yoga teacher - I gave up a 9-5 job in IT in 2012 and moved upto the Lake District in 2014 and can’t imagine living anywhere else. When I am not teaching or practising yoga, you can me find me outdoors, eating and baking, sometimes in the gym, travelling and looking after my super senior cat, and not necessarily in that order!

My Journey into Yoga

I have been practising yoga since my mid-twenties after becoming injured from running and have practiced ever since.  I have practiced various styles throughout the years, and my preferences are always changing as does my body and expectations.

Being injured and then having long term whiplash complications in in my back, shoulder and neck after a car accident, means that my way into yoga was purely for physical reasons but along the way I have discovered the more spiritual, traditional roots of yoga and the calmness and strength it can give you. I have been very fortunate to have visited India several times and to experience the yoga there where its deeply rooted in tradition and everyday life and very different to how we view yoga in the West.  I still have back issues but it is well managed with activity and movement as opposed to medication and steroid injections which is what I used to have following the car accident. Yoga, in its various forms, either the physical practice, the practice of breath, or the inward looking focus and concentration are all constants in my life.

As you can see from my photos, I enjoy the great outdoors, hiking, trekking, skiing, climbing, and yes, I still run (within reason) and yoga allows me to do these things,  giving a sense of my own body and knowing what I am physically able to do. Being able to breathe and be in control of my breath is a great help in bringing focus and balance literally!

I approach each class with an open mind, and am fully aware from my own experience that the ‘traditional’ pose is not always realistic.  Despite years of practice, there are some poses that I will never be able to do, and I am a teacher! I take a functional approach to teaching, if you are unable to touch your toes, it could still be the case even after hours of practice, it may become more comfortable trying to get there and I encourage a respect for your physical limits.  Our bodies are not made the same or equal, even the difference between morning and evening in the same person can be staggering.  My emphasis is on a safe and enjoyable practice using props and offer modifications/variations to the traditional poses.  I try to teach with common sense, a sense of humour and everyday language and am always happy to answer questions.

Given my love of the outdoors and my Yoga Hikes business, I have gravitated towards teaching yoga to active and outdoors folks, runners, cyclists and climbers but yoga is a great thing, it can be adapted and delivered to any audience.  I have had 1-1 clients of all ages, all looking for different things from their practice.  I am also a big fan of taking rest, and in the last few years have taken up more restorative and yin yoga (the slow type of yoga where you stay close to the ground) and have bought this into my teaching as we all need to pause and rest.  To complement this, I also teach a more moving practice in the mornings as we are always seeking that balance between the yin (slow) and yang (more dynamic) forms so my morning and evening classes are very different. As our bodies age, a different focus may be required for maintaining muscle mass and bone density and yoga, particularly the standing poses, can help with weight bearing, coordination, mobility and flexibility.

My Approach to Teaching Yoga

I also run Yoga Hikes with my partner Kevin sharing our love of yoga and hiking.  All breaks and weekends are based in the Lake District and are offered as a package usually 5 yoga classes, 2 guided hikes, accommodation and all food.
